Rae Lakes Loop is a hiking route located in Kings Canyon National Park. The loop is 41.4 miles long and covers a variety of different terrains. We started at the Bubbs Creek trailhead early Saturday morning and finished very later Sunday night.
Metrics:
- Distance: 41.4 miles
- Elevation gain: 7,500 feet (2286m)
- Elevation range: 5,020 - 11,960 feet
We did the hike in one night which is definetly aggressive for this type of trail. I would have loved to spend a few more days up around the lakes and had more time to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Day 1
Started around 7am from Bubbs Creek Trailhead. Picking up the permit was really easy and the ranger let us know about the current trail conditions. She told us there were some young black bears in the area around Bubbs Creek towards Glen Pass and to scare them off if we saw them. We did end up seeing two black bears throughout the trip. They were quite inquisitive but our yelling and shouting scared them off pretty quickly.
Today we did basically all the elevation gain. Going over Glen’s pass was a tough push and we were racing the sunset while setting up our tent. Luckily we got a break in the rain just as we set up our tent and were able to cook dinner without getting soaked.
Day 2
Started on the trail around 7am this morning for a long day of hiking. Got back to the car in the dark around 8:30pm and drove all the way back home. Took a quick break in Fresno to grab some in and out.
